Emergency Dentist Rockford IL

If an accident or an emergency dental situation occurs, it is wise to have a plan for such an occasion. It might be difficult to identify the difference between having a problem that can wait for a short time to be addressed versus having a serious issue that requires immediate attention.

Emergency Dentist at Padron Dental in Rockford

If you require immediate dental treatment to stop bleeding, alleviate pain, or prevent tooth loss, this is usually considered an emergency. Dental situations that are not considered dental emergencies might include a chipped tooth or a lost crown or filling, unless there is severe pain involved.

Emergency Dental Situations

By being prepared and knowing a few tips, you can make sure you can remain calm and know what to do when and if an issue happens. Here is a list of common dental ailments and how they are usually categorized.

Uncomfortable Toothaches

Toothache pain can become intense and overwhelming. Serious tooth pain can be from a dental abscess or infection, or from decay that has irritated the nerves in your tooth. If the tooth pain does not respond to an over-the-counter pain reliever, you need to consider it a dental emergency. Call Padron Dental immediately, and follow these tips until we can see you:

  • Hold a cold compress against the outside of your mouth near the sore tooth.
  • Use dental floss to remove any food that is lodged near the sore tooth.
  • Rinse your mouth with salt water to kill bacteria and alleviate inflammation.
  • Apply an oral numbing gel to the sore tooth and the gums around it.

A Knocked-Out Tooth

Having a tooth knocked out is traumatic. Take a deep breath and remember that we treat this kind of situation often. If you can see us within an hour, there is a good chance we will be able to re-insert the tooth into its socket and save it.

Call us immediately. Pick up the tooth by the crown, not the root, because you do not want to introduce bacteria to the tooth root. If there is debris on the tooth, run it under some clean, cold water, and do not dry it. Push it back into its socket, and bite down slowly to hold it in place until you reach us. If you cannot get the tooth back into its socket, place it in a cup of milk.

Our emergency treatment involves cleaning the socket, and then re-inserting the tooth in its socket. We will use wire or a special splint to hold the tooth in place. In just a few weeks, the jawbone will fuse to the tooth, making it stable once again.

A Lost Dental Crown

A lost crown is usually considered a dental emergency, but like a lost filling, you can wait for treatment. You can apply clove oil to the tooth to alleviate any soreness. You can also try applying denture glue to the tooth and slip the crown back over it. Never use super glue to reattach the crown. If you cannot get the crown to stay on your tooth, keep it in a plastic bag until you can come in.

A Damaged or Lost Filling

If you chip or crack a dental filling and do not experience any pain, you can call Padron Dental and schedule an appointment for repair. If you lose a filling totally, you can just put some sugar-free gum in the empty space. If this keeps you comfortable, you can see us to have the filling replaced within a few days. If the pain is unbearable, call us and we will insert a new filling promptly.

A Cracked or Broken Tooth

If you chip or break a tooth it is important to see Padron Dental urgently. The sooner we can treat you, the better chance we have of reattaching the broken piece to your damaged tooth. Save any pieces of the damaged tooth and rinse them gently in warm water. Then place them in a cup of milk and bring them on your appointment.

If the tooth is painful, take an over-the-counter pain reliever. Hold a cold compress against your cheek, and if you are bleeding, bite down on a piece of gauze to stop the bleeding.

Loose Braces Brackets

A loose braces bracket is not a reason to call an emergency dentist at 12:00 am, but it is a reason to see Padron Dental as soon as possible. Use orthodontic wax to hold the loose bracket in place. Also apply some wax over the top of the bracket so that it does not rub on your cheek. We will probably need to re-cement the bracket or replace it altogether.

If an arch wire breaks off or starts poking you in the cheek, this is also an emergency that can wait. To stop the wire from poking you, use a pencil eraser to bend it back against your teeth. Do not cut the wire, you do not want to swallow it. Cover the end of the wire with some orthodontic wax to prevent it from rubbing on your cheek. Eat soft foods until you have your braces repaired.

Drs. Cassaro & Nguyen

Dr. Cassaro’s education began at Marquette University, where he earned his BS degree in Biomedical Sciences, with honors. He continued at Marquette University, attending their Dental School where he received his degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery.

Dr. Ashley Nguyen is originally from upstate New York. Her first interest in dentistry came from her desire to help others attain a beautiful and healthy smile. This eventually led her to the University at Buffalo where she obtained a BS degree in Biomedical Sciences, with honors. From there she attended dental school at Midwestern University located near Chicago, IL.

A Dental Abscess

A dental abscess is an infection that happens in or around a tooth root. They can cause serious pain, and they can be dangerous as they can spread. It is important to seek treatment for a suspected dental abscess as soon as possible to reduce the chance of the infection spreading. If you have a fever or severe pain, call us immediately. If you do not have a fever and are able to manage your pain, you can call us in the morning, and we should be able to see you that same day.

As with all toothaches, you can keep the pain in check with cold compresses, salt-water rinses, and eating soft foods. Abscesses are often treated with a root canal procedure. If the tooth is badly infected, an extraction may be necessary.

An Oral Injury

If you have suffered an injury to your mouth resulting in either tissue damage or bleeding, you should get to an emergency room. They can suture up any external cuts and refer you to an emergency dentist for the damage to your teeth or soft tissues. On your way to the emergency room, you can control the bleeding by placing pressure on the wound with a cold compress. Rinse your mouth with cool water to control any bleeding from the internal cuts.
