Some types of damage to your teeth may only require a simple, cosmetic solution. If you have a crack or chip, you may only need dental bonding or a veneer. If the tooth has suffered severe damage or decay you may need to have your tooth extracted. You might have had an unfortunate accident that knocks a tooth out requiring a replacement. Whatever your case, if you have a gap when a tooth is missing, you should have it replaced. One of the absolute best replacement solutions today is a dental implant.

The Benefits of Choosing Dental Implants

Dental implants can offer you some significant benefits including the following:

  • Structural integrity: By filling in the gap, a dental implant not only preserves the density and integrity of the jawbone, but it also significantly reduces the likelihood of further infection.
  • An upgrade from dentures: Because they are fused to your jawbone, dental implants will not need to be removed, like dentures, which will dramatically improve your ability to chew foods and speak comfortably.
  • Improved aesthetics: Dental implants maintain and improve the natural appearance of your smile as well as your jawline and prevent any sagging of your face that will develop from missing teeth.
  • Overall oral health: Patients who have dental implants placed report an improved ability and likelihood to brush and floss normally, which results in improved overall oral health.

Dental implants can be a terrific option for you if you are looking for a long-term solution for your missing teeth. If you would like to learn more about dental implants, please contact our staff at Padron Dental and schedule and a consultation.

The Dental Implant Procedure

The entire dental implant procedure will take several visits and several months to complete.

The very first step is your initial evaluation. We will take x-rays to determine the density of your jawbone to confirm that it can support the implant. If your jawbone has atrophied, we may have to initiate the process by starting with bone grafting. Of course, if there is a decayed or damaged tooth that must be extracted, we will remove.

After these preliminary steps are completed, we will begin the actual implant process by administering a local anesthetic to the immediate area. When the tissue is numb, we will make a small incision to gain access to your jawbone. We will drill an exceedingly small hole and insert the titanium post into your jawbone.

The next step takes time and patience. It will take several months for the post to fuse or grow to the jawbone. This is an essential stage because this is how the strength and stability are secured. When we are confident that we have reached the necessary stability, we add an extension or abutment to reach the surface of your gumline. Now we complete the restoration by either screwing or cementing the artificial crown on the abutment and your dental implant is finished.

Proper Aftercare for Your New Dental Implant

One of the major contributing factors for the life expectancy of your dental implant will be how you care for it. Your dental implant should be treated just like a natural tooth and should be properly brushed and flossed the same. This will help to maintain the health of your gums, and your natural teeth.

A good preventative oral hygiene plan will strongly suggest that you brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time. This habit is complimented by flossing and rinsing at least once a day.

Even though your new implant will be strong a healing process is still required after your implant is placed. For the first few weeks Padron Dental will recommend a diet consisting of softer foods, with a slow introduction of harder foods. Your jawbone needs to acclimate to the new biting pressures that is being applied.

If your dental implant was the result of a sports injury, please use proper protection moving forward, such as a mouth guard. This will not only protect your new implant, but your natural teeth as well.

A dental implant is an excellent, long-term solution for tooth replacement.

A Dental Implant versus a Traditional Dental Bridge

Prior to choosing a dental implant you may also consider a dental bridge. The dental bridge uses the two neighboring natural teeth as abutments to support the artificial tooth or teeth to fill the gap. There are several varieties of dental bridges that can be used and even implant-supported bridges. The team at Padron Dental will discuss the differences between both.

A benefit of the dental bridge is the fact that the procedure is less invasive. Dental bridges are also considerably faster and less expensive. But your dental implant will last much longer, so you can end up spending more in the long run by choosing the bridge. Both treatment options are still viable solutions for addressing missing teeth today. Padron Dental will discuss your best option at your evaluation.
